Preparation

Choose a safe outdoor area. Set clear rules: only use objects that are already loose, do not break plants or trees, avoid sharp items, and return natural objects when finished.

Step-by-step

1. 1Give the group a few minutes to quietly find safe objects that can make sound, such as sticks, leaves, small stones, seed pods, or benches to tap gently.
2. 2Bring everyone back into a circle and let each person demonstrate their sound.
3. 3Sort the sounds into families: taps, shakes, scrapes, clicks, and low sounds.
4. 4Create a simple steady beat with one sound family.
5. 5Layer in the other sound families one at a time.
6. 6Use hand signals to bring sounds in, take them out, get louder, get softer, stop, or restart.
7. 7To make it longer, have small groups create short rhythm sections and perform them for each other.
8. 8To make it more challenging, accompany a chant or song, or ask the group to build an arrangement with intro, verse, chorus, and ending.
