Preparation

Stand or sit in a circle where everyone can see and hear each other.

Step-by-step

  1. 1Start with a simple four-count clap or tap pattern.
  2. 2Have the person next to you repeat the exact pattern.
  3. 3Continue passing the beat around the circle one person at a time.
  4. 4If the rhythm falls apart, reset warmly and try again at a slower tempo.
  5. 5After one full circle, invite a participant to create the next beat.
  6. 6To make it longer, layer body percussion: clap, snap, stomp, and chest tap.
  7. 7To make it more challenging, pass two different beats in opposite directions or ask the group to keep a quiet pulse underneath every pattern.
